Parkinson’s is the progressive disorder of the nervous system affecting the movement of the body.
The movement of the body gets affected due to problem in an important nerve cell of the brain, which makes a very important chemical in the brain called dopamine. Its function is to send signals to the part of brain which controls movement.
Parkinson’s develops gradually, and generally starts with tremors in hands and legs. After that, in the early stages of this disorder the face of the person starts showing little or no emotion, speech becomes slurred and low.
Parkinson’s has no cure, but medications or surgery may improve the symptoms markedly.

FACTS

Reason for development of Parkinson’s is still not known.

SYMPTOMS

  • Hand-writing becomes smaller
  • Slow or low voice
  • Masked face (looking scary, stoned and emotionless)
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Tremor/shaking of hands
  • Constipation
  • Rigid muscles
  • Loss of automatic changes
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Stooping/slouching while standing

CASE STUDIES

Mr D M, age 45 a lecturer of Philosophy while correcting the exam paper started feeling sudden tremors in her hand, they were shaking and she couldn’t control it, but that stopped in a few minutes and she ignored it initially. But after some period of time these involuntary movements became frequent at night and she sometimes took sleeping pills in order to fall asleep. After some period of time she started experiencing cramps in her body, and while teaching a class her students started complaining her voice was not audible to them. Soon after, her family noticed that her face looked worn out and tired day by day, even her body posture became loose and bended while sitting and standing. Mr D M upon physical evaluation at the clinic was found positive for Parkinson’s.
