The Past

They all say live in the present you can’t do much about what has happened in the past and you don’t know what the future holds for you. I agree it can’t be changed, but running away from it and denying it only makes you come back to it, like running in a round circle, you keep revisiting the same things over and over again. It’s just the universe’s way of telling, deal with your issues, accept them and learn what you were supposed to out of them.

What triggers this?

A painful memory, something which changed your whole world upside down, it changed how you think and in many ways it changed you as a person. You don’t deny the reality of what has transpired but you don’t accept it either. The incident could be losing your child, being raped, watching someone die, experiencing a natural disaster or even regret of something you did to a person, it can be anything. You never are able to accept what transpired, the entire incident just doesn’t register in your mind, the trauma and its resultant damage is too much for yourself defense mechanism to cope up with. So after a period of time, the mind starts giving you visual flashbacks of the same memory and you still are not able to deal with it. It’s just the mechanism of body to make you realize that this has happened, it won’t change and you have to deal with it, but it’s not easy. The damage done sometimes is too deep to heal on its own.

What can be done?

In psychological terms the occurrence of these visual flashbacks are termed as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. You need an expert to first assess the impact that the incident has had on your brain, then they understand the impact of the memory on your emotional well being and after the analysis, the process to heal you and make you come to terms with the event starts, it is done in a systematic way, in a way which your mind and body can handle. You are further supported by personalized counseling, safe pharmaceutical drugs to calm and relax the brain and various other therapies and exercises for your benefit.
